RZA: Raekwon Has List Of Demands For Wu-Tang Clan's "A Better Tomorrow"

RZA sends a message to his fellow Wu-Tang Clan members, says they should stop taking what the media reports for face value.

During an appearance on Hot 97, Wu-Tang Clan rapper RZA made it clear that lack of communication is one of the factors that has contributed to fellow Wu-Tang spitter Raekwon being absent in the creation of the group’s next studio album as well as the back-and-forth that has taken place between the two artists over the past few weeks.
When Hot 97 personality Ebro Darden spoke on clashing with his co-workers for the greater good, RZA revealed that it’s a similar situation between himself and Raekwon, only they aren’t able to interact on a daily or even weekly basis.
“We can call it arguing or we can call it building. But also sometimes—You guys may get a chance to come together every day or every week and communicate and work it out,” RZA said. “What we’re not doing though as brothers and as business brothers is [putting] time together. So, I gotta read about how he feels. He gotta read about how I feel…I try to make myself as available as I can. I will not deny I’m a busy man. I can’t deny that.”

RZA spoke further on his situation with Rae and informed listeners that an interview that was published by Rolling Stone  may have created a misunderstanding between the two. He also added that he has spoken to Raekwon recently and received a list of demands they’re currently working on.

“I wanna clear one thing up on the Raekwon thing because the newest article in Rolling Stone, Raekwon says that I’m a bold-face liar, right? Which I’m far from,” RZA said. “I don’t need to lie. Okay, I’m a grown man…But what happened was I did an interview a few weeks ago that just came out later. And I guess when it came out he read it then, but I spoke to Raekwon about eight days ago. But the interview was probably 14 or 16 days ago. So, he says in his interview ‘RZA’s a liar. He spoke to me.’ No, when I did the interview brother I didn’t speak [to you]. I hadn’t spoken to him in six months before that. Until recently. Last time I saw that brother was on tour in the summer. So, we didn’t get a chance to chop up the ideas of what I’m trying to do.

“But then we did speak a few days ago,” he added. “About six, seven days ago. And he gave me his demands. Which we presented to the company. Like ‘Yo, this is his demands.’ If they can be reached they can be reached. It they can’t they can’t. And if they can’t then we gotta reevaluate what we’re gonna do. But it was no lying there. And the only thing I would say is that I would respect if—like when I read something that Rae say I don’t really take it as if he said it cause he didn’t say it to me. I don’t know what these writers write…So, I wanted to say to all our Wu brothers that we should never take this press and media on face value. We can easily reach out to each other and get the facts. Don’t read the facts. Hear it right from the source.”

During an interview with Grantland last year, RZA revealed that Raekwon had been the most inactive when it concerned putting in studio time for Wu-Tang Clan’s upcoming album, A Better Tomorrow. In the time since that interview, both RZA and Raekwon have remained vocal about the project and their contributions to it, or lack of.
Most recently, RZA cited creative differences as one possible reason why Raekwon hasn’t lent his assistance for A Better Tomorrow.
“Raekwon has not been participating with that particular record,” the rapper said during an interview with Vlad TV published this month. “I haven’t had a chance to really talk to him about why not. All I see is the press going back and forth. But I would say that maybe creatively we on different paths. I’m creatively different than I was in the ‘90s.”

Raekwon On RZA: Wu-Tang Clan "Being Compromised By His So-Called 'Logic'"

Raekwon also says he hates the Wu-Tang Clan song "Keep Watch." Regarding RZA's claims the two didn't speak about Wu-Tang Clan's "A Better Tomorrow," Raekwon says, "Saying he didn't speak to me is a bold-faced lie."

Raekwon says that he agrees with RZA’s recent assessment that the two are not in accord regarding the Wu-Tang Clan’s forthcoming A Better Tomorrow album.

“We are at creative differences because at the end of the day, I want to win,” Raekwon says in an interview with Rolling Stone. "I’m used to being a winner. Being that I feel the team is being compromised by his so-called ‘logic' of making music, I have a problem with that because I love my fans. I would never want to give my fans anything other than the best. So when we’re sitting there discussing the creative process of making a great album for the fans, I’m not going to never settle for less. I’m not the only one [in the group] that feels this way too.”

Raekwon says one example of their differences is the Wu-Tang Clan song “Keep Watch." "I hate it,” Raekwon says. "I hate it. I don’t hate shit, but I hate that fuckin’ record. It ain’t the gunpowder that my brothers are spitting. It’s the production. And I ain’t shitting on the producer because he’s one of our soldiers. But if it ain’t where it need to be… It’s 20 years later. We talkin 'bout a whole new generation is sitting here representin' and making fiery shit and you telling me that we comin out with some mediocre shit? That ain’t part of our plan.”

Raekwon On Wu-Tang Clan: "I Am On Strike"

Given his problems, Raekwon says that he has to look at himself from a different perspective. "It’s the same as being an athlete,” he says. "I don’t give a fuck if it’s Kobe Bryant or Kevin Durant. They will not touch the floor if their managers or lawyers are saying, 'Listen, shit ain’t right.' So therefore, I’m in a limbo situation. So yeah, you’re right. I am on strike. It ain’t the fact that I don’t want to be there. Because of course I want to be there. But if we’re there, we gotta do the best everything. We gotta work 10 times harder, because that’s what I’m signing in for. I’m not about listening to somebody that’s not an artist telling me what the fuck they think is hot.

"As far as the RZA, I respect him,” he continues. "I love him – the love ain’t gonna go anywhere – but you’re not in the music world no more. So to me, you need to take a backseat and respect the niggas that is playing the game. I’m always out in the field and finding out what’s going on with the new

RZA said in an interview published this week that Raekwon was not involved in A Better Tomorrow.

"Raekwon has not been participating with that particular record,” RZA said. "I haven’t had a chance to really talk to him about why not. All I see is the press going back and forth. But I would say that maybe creatively we on different paths. I’m creatively different than I was in the ‘90s.” In the Rolling Stone article, Raekwon disputes RZA’s statements. "I don’t know why he said he didn’t speak to me, because he did speak to me,” Raekwon says. "We spoke about two weeks ago. It was me, him, his brother and business partner Devine and we talked about why I’m not there right now. They know where I’m at and at the end of the day, him saying he didn’t speak to me is a bold-faced lie."

Wu-Tang Clan Discusses Another Album, Dissension & Its Bond In 2014

Wu-Tang Clan members, including RZA and Raekwon, discuss the likelihood of another Wu-Tang Clan album. RZA says he's "pushing" and GZA says the group has nothing to prove.

Wu-Tang Clan artists recently spoke about the potential of an upcoming group album. Wu members discussed the likelihood of the project and the hurdles they've faced along the way in a profile by Grantland. The profile features different group members, including RZA, who says he is pushing for Wu-Tang Clan to unite on an album. “We all agree — me, you, and the rest of the world — that these guys are great by themselves any fucking way,” RZA says. “But they are greater when we come together! We come together, we make platinum, G. That’s the true fucking reward for our top talent. And I say that to the guys. I don’t know who hears me.” RZA says he's been trying to keep the Wu-Tang Clan album plans alive, though he has faced some obstacles along the way. Nevertheless, RZA says challenges aren't new to him. “In the beginning, I’d fight for the ship to go in the right direction,” RZA says. “Not just yelling. Physical fights. After five years, I just didn’t have the same willpower to fight...I felt really personally hurt after 8 Diagrams...That was my brothers and they [Wu-Tang Clan members] was shitting on it. I remember, it was all of us in a room, and I said, ‘I will never again step up and do business with you.’ Then the 20th anniversary came up. I said, ‘I gotta try it again.’ I’m pushing. I’m pushing.”

U-God Details Bond With Wu-Tang Clan Members

U-God's bond with several rappers in the Wu-Tang is "stilted," according to Grantland. The following excerpt reveals the different relationships he has with other members of the crew.

These days, U-God’s relationships with other members of the Wu are amicable, if stilted: Raekwon is “tired of hanging around me”; Ghostface has been rebuffing his offer for a full-album team-up, called Goldie and Ghost, for years. “Whatever. I don’t care,” he says. “Maybe when I was a little younger, it might’ve bothered me. I felt entitled. Nine egos, nine dudes, nine everybody thinking they the shit. [But] I’m not entitled to nothing but what I put work in for.

” U-God and RZA also "go through it," the rapper says. Despite any differences, he remains grateful for RZA's work in his career. “I love this nigga," U-God says. "He saved my fuckin’ life. He gave me a purpose. Nobody better be disrespecting him in front of me.”

Inspectah Deck Says Wu-Tang Clan's "Nucleus Has Separated"

Moreover, Inspectah Deck offers additional insight about the group's dynamics in the article.

“The nucleus has separated,” Deck says. “But it’s temporary. Once RZA throws up that Batman symbol, that Wu-Tang ‘W,’ it’s goin’ be on again. And I can’t wait.”

GZA also appears in the article, discussing his perspective on a new Wu-Tang Clan project. "It would be great to do another album, come back with a banger, but I don’t think we have anything to prove. We proved it already."

"And one of the guys who showed up the most was Method Man," RZA said at the time. "He showed the most tenacity, he was the most vocal, he showed up the most, and he got the most lyrics on the new album. He's already recorded eight or nine songs. He’s been on it. You know, I give Cappadonna credit, he’s been really on it. U-God has been present. Masta Killa be representing. Inspectah Deck has been somewhat present. Ghost has been, you know, 20 percent present. And Raekwon hasn't shown up at all. When you look at somebody like Masta Killa and U-God, they seem to have that original hunger to complete the legacy. I respect that everybody [is] busy with they own lives. I started with a plan that I thought would work. Now maybe my plan not working."

“Yo, all I can say is like—it’s business," Raekwon said. "You know? I would never put my family—First of all, you know that’s the mothership. Never ever ever gonna violate that, but at the same time it’s 20 years later, b. And business gotta be done correctly. I wanna be happy. You know what I mean? I wanna do this album in harmony. I wanna do it most likely—I wanna do it in the best way because, you know, brothers already said that’s the last joint. And that right there was like—I found out like y’all found out.”

“And I feel like it always be a lack of communication and the respect as men as somebody, as people who built this thing together,” Rae said. “You know? It wasn’t just one cat that—you know, he masterminded it of course. And I love him for that. And I’m always loyal cause he came and grabbed me out the street. But today being a 40-year-old man and having three seeds and having to deal with taxes and this and that, whenever I’m on the dance floor it’s business. You know what I’m saying? It’s business. It ain’t no disrespect. Don’t hit me with the brotherhood because that’s unconditional right there. Don’t use that as a shield. And a lot of times it’s like I watched them battle me and do certain things because I guess they feel like ‘Yo, Rae’s moving. We ain’t in control of Rae, so Rae’s gonna be the big problem.’ I’m running a business too. I got a label thing going on. It’s like my time is serious. You know what I mean? Cause I’m trying to build my artists and spread my legacy in a great way.”

Raekwon Talks Disapproval of Wu-Tang Clan's New Album A Better Tomorrow

“I would be the first one to say that we cannot leave everything in RZA’s hand no more. ... Every man plays an imperative role in this situation."

Yesterday, Wu-Tang Clan dropped "Keep Watch", the first single from their 20th anniversary album A Better Tomorrow, which is apparently "almost ready to ship." The sudden emergence of a single from the album was something of a surprise considering RZA's comments about Raekwon's lack of participation. Now, in an enormous Wu-Tang feature in Grantland, Raekwon has elaborated on his thoughts about the upcoming album, which was reportedly largely being helmed by RZA.

“I would be the first one to say that we cannot leave everything in RZA’s hand no more,” Rae says. “He has done his job to the greatest of his ability when we were younger, but now every man plays an imperative role in this situation. His plan was to do a more humble album. We was like, Nah. You can’t do that with the hardest group in the game.”

“We knew that wasn’t no single,” he said of "Family Reunion", the track RZA shared last summer. He also talked about the difficulty of getting everyone on the same page:

“It’s like getting the United Nations to all agree on one fucking thing,” Rae sputters. “Italy ain’t having it. Japan is on some shit. You know what I mean? Now, here it is, the 20-year anniversary that’s so decoratedly respected that we might not even be on time for this shit.”

There are quotes from several other members of the group about the new album, including GZA, who said, “It would be great to do another album, come back with a banger. But I don’t think we have anything to prove. We proved it already.
