REUP: If you love beats coupled with explosive lyrical content then Blackout! is your album. This highly anticipated effort features the combined powers of the Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man and the Def Squad's Redman--it's 19 cuts of pure excitement. Production highlights include the RZA-produced "Cereal Killer," Erick Sermon's "Maad Crew," and the dark-and-dirty sounds of "Run 4 Cover," featuring the Wu's Ghostface Killah and Streetlife. The album remains focused throughout without trying to appeal to any specific audience. Lyrically Red and Meth consistently come with the best in wit and wordplay, weaving a musical tapestry that should hang on the wall of any hip-hop fan. You won't find any specific messages, themes, or philosophies, but any true head will tell you that Blackout! is hip-hop at its best.

INFO: DJ Premier’s reuniting of Gang Starr late last year was welcomed by hip-hop fans young and old. The legendary super-producer scoured his immense archive of Guru verses, bringing back their seminal sound 16 years later with a new album aptly titled One of the Best Yet. Now Premier is back with a remix of one of the project’s standouts, “Bad Name,” tapping Redman and Method Man for blistering cameos.

“My plan all along was to include and do special remixes after One Of The Best Yet was released and I knew Red & Meth would be perfect for the remix of ‘Bad Name’ and they both really wanted to be a part of this remix for me and Guru,” Premier noted to Rolling Stone. “I did a new arrangement and its so dope with Red and Meth putting their spin on it. Meth is the perfect closer and Redman blacks out.”

Over the reworked instrumental, Redman and Method Man bring out their hard-nosed bars and brisk flows, reworking Guru’s lyrics in their own idiosyncratic styles. All three MCs intermingle with one another effortlessly, revitalizing the East Coast’s golden era sound. On the second verse, Redman raps “Lil n***as beef on the internet, big boys beef when the brand incorrect/Overall most of these n***as only beef with mine when they bring extra dinner guests/What happened to the street code, media gave n***as a cheat code.” Method Man follows this up with equal virulence on the closeout verse: “Word to God if Guru were still here, a lot of you weirdos wouldn’t have a real career/Just wannabe gangsters but you wouldn’t have Premier/Back in my day these wankstas they wouldn’t last a year.”

NEW: It’s been a decade since a landmark record in the hip hop game was released. That record? Blackout, which was released by the duo of MEthod Man & Redman. Yes, the same duo that brought you the stoner classic, How High. Now, both artists had/have solid careers on their own, but there’s something about the combination of the two that has proven explosive and to promote the May 19th release of Blackout 2 they teamed up with DJ Green Lantern to bring you and us, Lights Out.

Due to the large amount of music we get at UTG, it’s hard to always listen to classic records, but lucky for me the Lights Out mixtape got out and I was able to fade back to middle school James who thought he knew a thing or two about music. Having grown quite a bit since then, I was curious if the flow of Meth & Red would still hit like it did before, and it did. Hard. Skipping the pointless introduction that basically says what I did in the introducory paragraph, “Dangerous MCs,” busts out with a solid throwback beat and verses from each artist that reminds you why you love them. Redman totally takes the cake early on in this mixtape, but Method still has it as well. An appearance from Saukrates makes “A Yo” an instantly approachable track. It’s just radio ready [minus the vocal sample in the middle].

Meth then takes the reins on, “Well All Rite Cha.” It’s like he picked right up with Tikal 2000 left off back at the turn of the millenium. In addition to these, “The Rockwilder,” a throwback to the last Blackout as well as “4 Minutes to Lock Down” keeps the fire coming throughout the release.

There is a downside though, but it’s one that comes with nearly every mixtape and that’s throw away tracks. “How High,” for instance, is near worthless. I mean the old school beat is appealing, but as it gets going, you get bored quite quickly. Also, the interlude, which is useless on nearly every record ever, is passable on every listen.

It may have been a decade, but Method Man & Redman have still got it. Not only do they still got it, they’ve evolved and are stronger and more ferocious than last time before. There’s been too many throwaway hip hop records this year and if this mixtape is any sign, Blackout 2 will change that. Regardless, this is one tape you’re going to want to keep close for awhile to come.

NEW: This is the track about which all the beef between LL and Canibus started. LL wrote his lyrics, sent tapes to all the other rappers, they wrote their battle raps to it, and after they sent their verses back, LL change his verse which pissed Canibus off. Anyway, DOPE track, but who needs Master-Ohhhweeee-P. on such a track?
